WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -- Marathon County Public Library officials are keeping their fingers crossed that a new roof will be installed on the downtown Wausau branch before any more snow flys.

"The approval process has all been taken care of, the county's facilities department does have their leadership team ready to go, right now it's just a matter of making sure all the piece are in place and the weather cooperates," said Library Director Ralph Illick.

Library officials say the current roof is at the end of a 25-year life cycle and has been acting up in recent months. Illick says it's a flat-membrane roof, meaning when the rain does get underneath it can leak anywhere in the building. "Those leaks can come in at different places, so it makes troubleshooting more challenging." He adds that the library hasn't seen any damage to books, computers, or other items because of the leaks.

A start date for the project hasn't been established but leaders are hopeful that the work will be completed by the end of the year. Back in July, the library budgeted $276,000 for the project with the intention of replacing the roof completely. Building managers also called for some preventave maintenance to be done on the structure to help the new roof last a few more years.
